During Agricultural Biotechnology Week, the Puerto Rico Agricultural Biotechnology Industry Association (PRABIA) is partnering with industry experts to raise awareness about the significance of sustainability for Puerto Rico and beyond. From August 16 to 20, PRABIA will host a series of virtual conferences focusing on biotechnology, agriculture, and sustainability.

According to agronomist Sol Rosado, President of PRABIA, understanding the impact of biotechnology on the future of Puerto Rico and the world is essential. “Over the years, we have taken on the responsibility of educating the public about the vital role of biotechnology in shaping our future. This sector not only contributes to building a better tomorrow but also prioritizes environmental sustainability. As scientists with social and environmental awareness, it is our duty to demonstrate that biotechnology represents innovation, accompanied by best practices that help us tackle present and future challenges,” said Rosado.

With the theme “Together Toward a More Sustainable Agriculture,” PRABIA will explore key topics including sustainable agricultural development tools and sustainability as a way of life. Additional discussions will cover entrepreneurship in agriculture, resource conservation, and technological advances in biotechnology. The event will also address the intersection of social commitment, agricultural sustainability, food security, and climate change.

The event will bring together leading experts from the fields of agricultural biotechnology, agriculture, and science. Speakers include Ernesto Morales, Warnings Coordinator at the National Weather Service; Irving Rodríguez, President of the College of Agronomists; representatives from the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Foundation at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez; and professionals from organizations such as Syngenta, RiceTec, Corteva, Bayer, BASF, the Business Center for Women in Agriculture, 4H clubs, and the Puerto Rico FFA Association.

PRABIA and its member companies are committed to strengthening Puerto Rico’s biotechnology industry while upholding environmental responsibility and fostering economic growth within local communities. The Association generates approximately 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, promotes education, supports academia, and develops programs aimed at training the next generation of scientists and agronomists.
