El evento de tres d\u00edas sirvi\u00f3 de plataforma para el intercambio de nuevos conocimientos y propuestas, exponer lo \u00faltimo en tecnolog\u00edas relacionadas y dar a conocer los planes en desarrollo para atender temas apremiantes como la seguridad alimentaria, hambruna y valor nutritivo de los alimentos, entre otros.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>La convenci\u00f3n tuvo como apertura una mesa redonda, donde se discuti\u00f3 el futuro impacto del sector de biotecnolog\u00eda agr\u00edcola en Puerto Rico. Dentro de este foro particip\u00f3 el sector acad\u00e9mico, representado por Ra\u00fal E. Macchiavelli, Decano de Ciencias Agr\u00edcolas de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto Mayag\u00fcez y Alma L. Santiago, Decana de Ciencias de la Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Ponce, donde resaltaron la importancia de la uni\u00f3n entre la academia y la industria. Por otro lado la Secretaria de Agricultura, Myrna Comas coment\u00f3 que \u201ceste sector est\u00e1 altamente regulado y las empresas de PRABIA est\u00e1n en total cumplimiento. A trav\u00e9s de la tecnolog\u00eda que aporta la industria y las empresas que la integran, hemos rescatado tierras con alto potencial de desarrollo agr\u00edcola\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan Beatriz Carri\u00f3n, directora ejecutiva de PRABIA, \u201cesta convenci\u00f3n destac\u00f3 la importancia de la industria de la biotecnolog\u00eda agr\u00edcola, tanto aqu\u00ed como en el extranjero, y valid\u00f3 el alcance del rol que Puerto Rico tiene en ella. Adem\u00e1s de explorar las actividades que nuestra industria est\u00e1 emprendiendo para impulsar la investigaci\u00f3n, el desarrollo y mejores pr\u00e1cticas para atender las necesidades alimentarias de la humanidad, esta convenci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n destac\u00f3  que esta industria genera empleos y actividad econ\u00f3mica en Puerto Rico, y es instrumental en fortalecer una econom\u00eda diversificada y basada en el conocimiento, que es uno de los pilares del plan de desarrollo econ\u00f3mico del Pa\u00eds\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Un nutrido grupo de conferenciantes de diversos pa\u00edses aprovecharon la Convenci\u00f3n para compartir con sus colegas los \u00faltimos avances que se est\u00e1n realizando. Por ejemplo, el ingeniero agr\u00f3nomo Leandro Manoel Mar\u00eda, promotor t\u00e9cnico para \u00c1frica, Am\u00e9rica del Norte y Central, Europa Oriental, Asia y Ocean\u00eda para la empresa BALDAN, dio una charla sobre t\u00e9cnicas de preparaci\u00f3n de campo y su aplicaci\u00f3n en los suelos de Puerto Rico. Elaine Daly, del departamento de Ingeniera de Aplicaciones de Campo Agr\u00edcola en Trimble Navigation, discuti\u00f3 todo lo nuevo que est\u00e1 sucediendo en el \u00e1rea de sistema de informaci\u00f3n de suelos.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Por su parte, el hidr\u00f3logo puertorrique\u00f1o Angel Rom\u00e1n-M\u00e1s toc\u00f3 el tema de la innecesaria crisis de los acu\u00edferos del sur, mientras que el Dr. Leandro Perugini, PhD, investigador en DuPont Pioneer, habl\u00f3 sobre la nueva tecnolog\u00eda CRISPR-Cas 9, que ayuda en la reproducci\u00f3n de cultivos de manera m\u00e1s eficiente y sostenible. Guilherme Trivellato, de la empresa Oxitec en Brasil, explor\u00f3 la idea de mosquitos transg\u00e9nicos para ayudar en la guerra contra el virus del zika. El Dr. Bond McInnes, PhD, de DuPont Crop Protection, convers\u00f3 sobre las mejores pr\u00e1cticas para el manejo de enfermedades en los cultivos.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Otras conferencias celebradas durante la Convenci\u00f3n incluyeron temas como el desarrollo de cultivos resistentes a plagas e insecticidas, sistemas de irrigaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s eficientes y sostenibles, las normas de protecci\u00f3n del trabajador agr\u00edcola, y otros.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>La Convenci\u00f3n de PRABIA es una de las m\u00e1s prestigiosas a nivel mundial y, como evento, ayuda a destacar que la inversi\u00f3n en biotecnolog\u00eda agr\u00edcola es esencial para continuar creando empleos, atrayendo capital y robusteciendo el rol de Puerto Rico en el escenario internacional, y as\u00ed crear un efecto multiplicador en la econom\u00eda. Es aqu\u00ed donde se inician o adelantan conversaciones para mostrar las ventajas de Puerto Rico como destino propicio para inversiones y desarrollo en este rengl\u00f3n. The academic sector participated in this forum, represented by Ra\u00fal E. Macchiavelli, Dean of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayag\u00fcez Campus, and Alma L. Santiago, Dean of Sciences of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ponce, where they highlighted the importance of the union between academia and industry. On the other hand, the Secretary of Agriculture, Myrna Comas commented that \u201cthis sector is highly regulated and PRABIA companies are in full compliance. Through the technology provided by the industry and the companies that make it up, we have rescued lands with high potential for agricultural development.\u201d\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nAccording to Beatriz Carri\u00f3n, executive director of PRABIA, \u201cthis convention highlighted the importance of the agricultural biotechnology industry, both here and abroad, and validated the scope of the role that Puerto Rico has in it. In addition to exploring the activities that our industry is undertaking to promote research, development, and best practices to meet the food needs of humanity, this convention also highlighted that this industry generates jobs and economic activity in Puerto Rico, and is instrumental in strengthening a diversified and knowledge-based economy, which is one of the pillars of the country's economic development plan\u201d.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nA large group of speakers from various countries took advantage of the Convention to share with their colleagues the latest advances being made. For example, agronomist Leandro Manoel Mar\u00eda, technical promoter for Africa, North and Central America, Eastern Europe, Asia and Oceania for the company BALDAN, gave a talk on field preparation techniques and their application to the soils of Puerto Rico. . Elaine Daly, from the Agricultural Field Applications Engineering department at Trimble Navigation, discussed all the new things that are happening in the soil information system area.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nFor his part, Puerto Rican hydrologist Angel Rom\u00e1n-M\u00e1s touched on the needless crisis in southern aquifers, while Dr. Leandro Perugini, PhD, a researcher at DuPont Pioneer, spoke about the new CRISPR-Cas 9 technology, which It helps in the reproduction of crops more efficiently and sustainably. Guilherme Trivellato, of the Oxitec company in Brazil, explored the idea of transgenic mosquitoes to help in the war against the Zika virus. Dr. Bond McInnes, PhD, of DuPont Crop Protection, discussed best practices for managing crop diseases.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nOther conferences held during the Convention included topics such as the development of crops resistant to pests and insecticides, more efficient and sustainable irrigation systems, agricultural worker protection regulations, and others.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nThe PRABIA Convention is one of the most prestigious worldwide and, as an event, helps to highlight that investment in agricultural biotechnology is essential to continue creating jobs, attracting capital and strengthening the role of Puerto Rico on the international stage, and thus create a multiplier effect in the economy. It is here where conversations are initiated or advanced to show the advantages of Puerto Rico as a suitable destination for investment and development in this area.
