Ponce, Puerto Rico \u2013 Recientemente, estudiantes de escuela superior completaron exitosamente el campamento del Centro de Ense\u00f1anza e Investigaci\u00f3n en Biotecnolog\u00eda y Agrobiotecnolog\u00eda (CEIBA), viviendo experiencias \u00fanicas y conociendo m\u00e1s de cerca el campo de la biotecnolog\u00eda agr\u00edcola como carrera profesional.<\/p>\n

El Biotech Summer Campes una iniciativa de la Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Puerto Rico en la que la Asociaci\u00f3n de Biotecnolog\u00eda Agr\u00edcola de Puerto Rico (PRABIA, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) funge como colaborador cada a\u00f1o.<\/p>\n

Sol Rosado, presidenta de PRABIA dijo que, \u201cpara nosotros es importante reiterar el compromiso que la Asociaci\u00f3n tiene con despertar en los j\u00f3venes un inter\u00e9s por el sector de la biotecnolog\u00eda. El Biotech Summer Camplogra esto a trav\u00e9s de un nutrido curr\u00edculo que integra actividades educativas, conferencias, talleres de bioinform\u00e1tica, y la realizaci\u00f3n de una variedad de investigaciones y estudios pr\u00e1cticos. El objetivo primordial es que los j\u00f3venes conozcan el alcance e impacto de este sector y que lo vean como una posible carrera acad\u00e9mica y\/o profesional\u201d.<\/p>\n

La ejecutiva destac\u00f3 adem\u00e1s que PRABIA toma muy en serio el apoyo a la educaci\u00f3n para dotar a los innovadores y l\u00edderes del futuro con las habilidades, talentos y diversidad para aportar a la creaci\u00f3n de un mundo mejor. \u201cA diario, nuestros bi\u00f3logos, agr\u00f3nomos, ingenieros y cient\u00edficos participan activamente en diferentes proyectos que impactan positivamente las comunidades en las que trabajamos, vivimos y nos apasiona empoderar a la gente\u201d, a\u00f1adi\u00f3 Rosado.<\/p>\n

El campamento Biotech Summer Camptiene una duraci\u00f3n de cuatro semanas y se compone de estudiantes de escuelas del sistema p\u00fablico de nivel superior del \u00e1rea sur. Cuenta adem\u00e1s con el auspicio de otras empresas miembros de PRABIA, cuyas instalaciones reciben la visita de los participantes del campamento. La Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Puerto Rico estableci\u00f3 CEIBA en 2011 y hoy d\u00eda es un centro de investigaci\u00f3n \u00fanico con un enfoque especial en la agrobiotecnolog\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Fundada en 1995, la Puerto Rico Agricultural Biotechnology Industry Association, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s, PRABIA, es una organizaci\u00f3n sin fines de lucro que re\u00fane a las empresas de biotecnolog\u00eda agr\u00edcola que operan en Puerto Rico \u2013 AgReliant Genetics, Bayer, Dow AgroSciences, Syngenta, Illinois Crop Improvement, Monsanto del Caribe y DuPont Pioneer. La Asociaci\u00f3n tiene como objetivo fortalecer el ecosistema de biotecnolog\u00eda agr\u00edcola en la Isla a la luz de los retos de producci\u00f3n global de alimentos. The Biotech Summer Camp accomplishes this through a rich curriculum that integrates educational activities, lectures, bioinformatics workshops, and the conduct of a variety of research and practical studies. The main objective is that young people know the scope and impact of this sector and that they see it as a possible academic and\/or professional career\u201d.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThe executive also highlighted that PRABIA takes support for education very seriously to equip innovators and leaders of the future with the skills, talents and diversity to contribute to the creation of a better world. \u201cEvery day, our biologists, agronomists, engineers, and scientists actively participate in different projects that positively impact the communities in which we work, live, and we are passionate about empowering people,\u201d added Rosado.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThe Biotech Summer Camp lasts four weeks and is made up of students from public high school systems in the southern area. It also has the sponsorship of other member companies of PRABIA, whose facilities are visited by camp participants.
